On the 6th June it will be the 80th Anniversary of the disaster at Astley Green which claimed the lives of 5 men. Late last year we ran a crowdfunding campaign to help raise the money for a memorial bench for each of the 5 victims. Carol Parkes our artist and volunteer has also been working on an art installation to complement these benches entitled ” no afternoon shift.” When the 5 benches arrive they will be placed in the area we have cleared around the top of the shaft, on the Pit bank, to hopefully create an area for quiet contemplation and affording wonderful views of the headgear and site. On Thursday 6th June at 6.00pm we will also be holding a small service to remember these men and we will have a small exhibition detailing their lives and the disaster and the work of many brave men who tried to rescue them. This service will be open to everyone and the exhibition will remain on display till the end of July. This is Carol’s concept drawing for the art installation with one of the pieces finished and the beautiful illustration she has done in the colliery memorial book.
